“…In terms of a good vibe, a genuine sense of family business, convenience of location, an intriguing selection of merchandise and genuine clerk expertise, I have to give it to Acme Music. I’m delighted to have found this store, and I intend to go back. Guitar Center will remain a fun hang for me, and I’m pleased to have made the acquaintance of the folks at Music Works….”” The Music and Sound Retailer Magazine
BEST INDEPENDENT MUSIC SHOP AND MORE: Acme of Music—long a gem in the Laurel District—recently moved to a directly new, larger space near the top of Piedmont Avenue. It’s a retail, repair, and artistic space that defies easy categorization. The staff and teachers offer lessons and workshops, and they fix, rent, and sell vintage and new instruments as well as electronic equipment. In myriad, mellifluous ways, this funky, home-grown business promotes harmony and creativity in the community. Oakland Magazine
Acme House of Music is a local, family owned full-service music shop.
Why shop Acme?
Did you know that for every $100 spent in an independent store, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. Spend the same in a national chain and $43 stays. Spend online? Nothing. http://www.the350project.net/
In addition to all the reasons to shop local, small businesses (Why shop local, small business?), at Acme, we are a SERVICE business rather than simply a commodity business. Even so, we come close to, if not match, the prices of online shops and big box stores (at a cost to ourselves–we simply do not get the volume discounts to wholesale products that these competitors get, and likewise don’t have the volume of sales they benefit from). Additionally, we put more of ourselves directly back into the community. While we are working to support ourselves, we are trying to do it in a soulful way that has benefits beyond profits for us.
We believe in having a positive impact on the community around us and in doing business with integrity. It’s our mission to make music and creative expression ACCESSIBLE. We strive to be a family-friendly, welcoming place where music making of all sorts is appreciated. We are dedicated to providing VALUE, which is one of the reasons why we carry used gear and do repairs.
We have private lessons for children and adults, both beginners and more advanced students. Our teachers have performed and recorded with the likes of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Santana, Bobbi McFerrin and many more…
Our products include hand-crafted and customized instruments from local artisans (guitars, amps, drums and more!)
We carry new and used instruments, recording gear (mixers, mics etc), PA gear, home stereo components and much much more.
We also offer sound consulting services for anyone looking to economically and effectively install, maintain or idealize professional sound installations, churches, night clubs, and so on).
